Lisa Fraser Counseling

Trauma-informed

Viewing a person’s behavior through the lens of past trauma and current coping mechanisms often gives a much more complete picture of their experience, what they may need in the present, and what treatment may be most helpful. It’s not about what’s wrong with you; it’s about what happened to you.

Client-centered

I trust you as the expert on your own experience. I don’t offer magic solutions, but I do act as a darn good GPS to help you figure out where you are and get where you want to go.

Attachment-based

Formed in childhood, your attachment style impacts the relationships you create and how you experience the world. Healing attachment wounds and learning how to feel safe in connection with others, can change the trajectory of your life.

Hello! I’m Lisa

Licensed Therapist

…who has seen how therapy has greatly improved my life and the lives of my loved ones. I have discovered that navigating difficult problems and making challenging transitions are easier when someone who’s familiar with the terrain goes with you.

My mission is to help people learn to look at the past in a way that takes responsibility without shame or judgment, to heal the issues that are currently surfacing in their lives, to learn to safely occupy their space in relationships and in the world, and to discover that they are unconditionally worthy of wholeness, peace, and joy.

I have been certified in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.A. from Antioch University Seattle), in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), in Dreamwork (Jungian, Active/shamanic Dreaming), and in Energy Psychology (Johrei, Reiki Master Therapist). My undergraduate degree, also from Antioch, is in Liberal Arts with a focus in Spiritual Psychology. I have worked with clients dealing with cancer, chronic illness, childhood emotional/physical/sexual abuse, religious oppression/abuse, childhood alcoholic parents, and other forms of trauma and wounding. I have mentored and coached individuals, assisting with life transitions, spiritual exploration, and relationship healing. Grounded in the science of psychology and the art of metaphysics, I bring a fluid, inclusive perspective and the ability to meet people where they are with openness and respect.

How I Can Help

Trauma, Abuse, Anxiety, & Depression

When we’re out of sync with ourselves our one of our primary groups (family, religion, work, community), life can be painful. We often feel guilt or shame because we can’t measure up or make things work—no matter how hard we try. This can happen during times of transition such as moving, starting a new relationship, adding a partner or child(ren) to the family; or the feelings can linger from our past, sometimes reaching back to childhood.

Most of the people I work with have experienced childhood trauma—from parents, caregivers, churches or cults, leaving them with gaps in their developmental experience. If we didn’t have the opportunity to learn something at eight, we may feel shamed or somehow handicapped when we find ourselves stumbling through it at age 38. Or 68. Turning that frustration on ourselves compounds the problem and makes everything feel worse.

What if you didn’t have to feel that way?

Individual Psychotherapy

I welcome clients 16 years and older. Together we can create a safe and confidential space to explore feelings and beliefs, to work through difficult or challenging memories, or to work toward deeper self-knowledge.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a specific type of therapy used to help the brain file away past experiences that stay in the foreground instead of receding with time. EMDR for a single trauma (like a car accident) can often prove effective in 6-12 sessions. Although working on multiple traumas generally takes longer, the result is usually still a shorter duration of treatment than many kinds of talk therapy.

"If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can't survive.”

― Brené Brown, LCSW, PhD, Daring Greatly

"Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives."

— Bessel Van der Kolk, PhD, The Body Keeps the Score

Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others. Therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or are able to resist, all move in a positive direction.”
